Sir,
I have laid before the Lords Commissioners of
His Majesty's Treasury Mr. Grindle's letter of the
19th instant (34096/1917) and its enclosures relative to
$1 notes in Hong Kong.
In reply I am to request you to inform Mr.
Secretary Long that on the understanding that the
existing condition as to security is maintained (viz.
that a special reserve of Mexican dollars equal to the full extent of the issue will be deposited in a separate vault) and that the whole issue remains subject to unconditional withdrawal should the Hong Kong Government
decide to issue notes of less than $5, My Lords sanction the increase to $700,000 of the $1 dollar note issue of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation.
The Under Secretary of State,
